Vineyards near Zielona Góra

The Landscape of Zielona Góra

Zielona Góra boasts a centuries-old winemaking tradition that began in the Middle Ages. Settlers from Franconia planted the first vineyards in 1150, and the earliest written record dates back to 1314. The town quickly became the northeasternmost wine district in Europe, reaching its heyday at the end of the 15th century.

In the 19th century, Zielona Góra became renowned for sparkling wines: in 1826 the Grempler & Co. winery was founded, followed by Fritz Brieger’s production facility in the cellars on Zamkowa and Boduena streets in 1880. Although World War II and the post-war period took their toll, passionate advocates of the local heritage spurred a renaissance around the turn of the 21st century.

A must-see is the Wine Museum within the Lubusz Museum of the Earth, housed since 2006 in meticulously restored historic wine cellars beneath the museum building. Visitors can also explore remnants of the old underground cellar network under the Market Square and Old Town streets, where grapes were once stored and wines aged—today brought to life during the annual Winobranie Festival.

For anyone looking to combine sightseeing in this dynamic city with discovering Polish winemaking, we’ve prepared a list of vineyards that can be visited on a half-day or full-day trip starting from Zielona Góra Główna railway station. Departing by car in the morning, you can visit one or several wineries, enjoy a pleasant time with a glass of wine, and return to Zielona Góra the same day (perhaps for further tasting in one of the many wine cellars or wine bars). Because many smaller wineries do not yet keep regular opening hours, it’s best to call ahead and schedule your visit—otherwise, you may arrive to find no one on site. Contact details are available on each winery’s page on our portal.
