Winnica Turnau

Turnau Vineyard is located in Baniewice, in the Banie municipality in West Pomerania, about 50 kilometers south of Szczecin, among the most northerly vineyards in Poland. According to vineyard data, Turnau Vineyard comprises two parcels with a combined area of 41 hectares and is one of the largest vineyards in Poland.
The seat of Turnau Vineyard is a restored 19th-century farm building. Inside it are the winery's own processing facility, a laboratory, offices, a shop, and a tasting and concert hall where tastings and concerts are held, including jazz music. Turnau Vineyard offers tours of the winery and the vineyards, as well as accommodation for visitors.
Turnau Vineyard is a family venture whose shareholders are Zbigniew, Grzegorz, Jacek and Stanisław Turnau. German winemaker Frank Faust works at the winery on a daily basis. Turnau Vineyard produces wines from grapes harvested on its own parcels, including ice wine from fruit picked after it has frozen on the vines, and the sparkling wine Classique Brut. The bottles are available at the winery in Baniewice and at points of sale across Poland.
HISTORY OF Winnica Turnau
The history of Turnau Vineyard begins with the Turnau family from southeastern Poland. Jerzy Turnau (1869–1925), a graduate of the Hochschule für Bodenkultur in Vienna, was the owner of an estate in Mikulice near Przeworsk, and was also a painter and a writer. In 1919 he initiated the establishment of the Higher Courses for the Landowning Class in Lviv (Lwów), which were colloquially known as the 'Turnau Courses'.
Before World War II, the Turnau family owned a vineyard in Urzejowice, and on the land of Baniewice, grapevines had already been cultivated before the war. One of Jerzy Turnau's great-grandsons, Zbigniew, ran a large farm in West Pomerania, where cereals and rapeseed were grown. The idea of establishing a vineyard came from Tomasz Kasicki, an agronomist and a long-time employee of the farm. In 2009 the planting of the vines and the renovation of the farm building began, and in 2010 the company Winnica Baniewice was established.
After the initial plantings, Turnau Vineyard was expanded by a second parcel with a southerly exposure, located around a lake — analyses indicated that the local climatic conditions are similar to those in Champagne. The first harvest took place in 2014, and the first wines from Turnau Vineyard went on sale in May 2015. In 2014, Frank Faust, a winemaker from the German Rheingau, came to Baniewice, where he has been working at the vineyard ever since and is its co-owner. The project received a subsidy of 1.4 million złoty from EU funds.
Grzegorz Turnau, a singer, composer and poet, joined the company; he and Zbigniew shared a common great-grandfather, Jerzy Turnau. In 2017, management of the company was taken over by Zbigniew's son, Jacek Turnau. Turnau Vineyard has entered the history of Polish winemaking as the producer that produced ice wine commercially.
