Winnica Saganum
Established in 2017, Winnica Saganum is located in the picturesque Bóbr Valley in Bożnów, near Żagań, in the Lubusz Voivodeship. The name "Saganum" derives from the Latin name for Żagań, reflecting the region's rich winemaking tradition. The vineyard covers approximately 5 hectares, cultivating both white and red grape varieties. White varieties include Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Solaris, Souvignier Gris, and Hibernal, while red varieties encompass Pinot Noir, Dornfelder, Rondo, and Regent. The vineyard offers tours and tastings in the cellars of the 13th-century monastery of the Canons Regular in Żagań, where wines mature in the unique atmosphere of historic walls.
HISTORY OF Winnica Saganum
The history of viticulture in Żagań dates back to the late 13th century, when monks cultivated grapevines on monastic fields. The first secular vineyards appeared in the 16th century, and in the 19th century, the largest and most representative ducal vineyard was established on the slopes of Weinberg (Wine Hill). In 2017, 500 meters from this historic site, Winnica Saganum was founded, continuing the region's winemaking traditions. Currently, red wines mature in the cellars of the 13th-century monastery of the Canons Regular in Żagań, where over seven hundred years ago, monks stored and aged grape wine.
