Lubusz Wine and Honey Trail: Vineyards on the Route

The Landscape of Zielona Góra

History of the Route

The Lubusz Wine and Honey Trail was established in March 2007 at the initiative of the Zielona Góra Winemakers’ Association, based in Zielona Góra. The idea of creating the trail as a tourist product was born in 2006, and its official launch took place at the 7th “ZATUR” Tourism Fair in Drzonków in 2008, where the trail received a special distinction.

The trail was developed based on the region’s potential in traditional products – grape wine and bee honey – which are among the oldest natural food products. The trail’s main goal is to promote the Lubusz region and its traditional products, showcase the voivodeship’s potential in wine and honey production, and introduce tourists to the winemaking and beekeeping traditions of the area.

Trail Characteristics

The trail currently stretches over 200 kilometers and includes more than fifty locations related to winemaking and beekeeping. By the end of 2014, 61 sites were included on the trail, far exceeding the original plan of 14 stops.

The route winds through the picturesque hills of the Zielona Góra Upland, the Oder River Valley, forested areas, and the post-glacial lake district, offering tourists not only tastings of wine and honey but also beautiful landscapes.

History of Winemaking in the Region

The winemaking tradition in Lubusz dates back to the mid-12th century. The first vineyards were established by settlers from Flanders, Wallonia, and Franconia around 1150. The first written mention of vineyards in Grünberg (Zielona Góra) is from 1314.

The peak of winemaking came at the end of the 18th century. In 1800, the region hosted 2,200 vineyards covering 715 hectares. However, over the next centuries, production declined due to imported competition and industrialization. After World War II, only 66 hectares remained, and the last industrial vineyard was closed in 1977.

The revival began in the early 21st century. In 2013, the first vines were planted on a hill between Łaz and Zabór, creating the Self-Government Vineyard, where 13 parcels were designated for Lubusz winemakers.

Thanks to this rich tradition, favorable climate, and soil conditions, Lubusz wineries have won numerous awards at prestigious wine competitions:
