Winnica Arbor
Arbor Vineyard is located in Bolestraszyce, in the Municipality of Żurawica, in the Przemyśl County (Podkarpackie Voivodeship), in the vicinity of the Bolestraszyce Arboretum. The vineyard's plantings lie at an elevation of approximately 250 m above sea level. Arbor Vineyard covers 0.5 ha and, according to its description in the Podkarpacia Vintners Association, counts over 2,000 vines; in the vineyard's materials from recent editions of wine fairs, the area is already given as 0.8 ha and over 3,000 vines, a result of the planned expansion of the plantings.
The vineyard is run by Jakub and Anna Micał. Arbor Vineyard mainly produces varietal wines; according to the owners, most of the work in the vineyard, including weeding, is done by hand, without the use of herbicides.
On the grounds of Arbor Vineyard there is a wooden gazebo with a grill and smokehouse, and an open fire pit for a kettle and campfire, which guests use for gatherings and tastings. Arbor Vineyard also organizes group events at this location, and in the catalog of the Podkarpacia Vintners Association it is listed with the designation of wine tasting and sales services.
In the vicinity of Arbor Vineyard there are points that can be included in a visit plan: about 300 m from the vineyard stands the Bolestraszyce Villa providing hotel and catering services, and about 800 m further away lies the Main Armored Fort XIII San-Rideau. Arbor Vineyard is also directly adjacent to the grounds of the Arboretum, which makes it possible to combine a tasting with a visit to the arboretum and the fortifications.
HISTORY OF Winnica Arbor
Arbor Vineyard has been in operation since 2015, and the owners made their first sale of their own wines in 2021. Arbor Vineyard is a member of the Podkarpacia Vintners Association, which represents the region's vineyards and organizes industry competitions and meetings.
Bolestraszyce, where Arbor Vineyard is located, is a settlement with a manor-house history. The historic manor and garden complex included, among other things, manor buildings from the late 18th century, and in the mid-19th century the painter Piotr Michałowski lived and created in the manor. Within the complex, a chapel has been preserved that is a remnant of the defensive tower of the former castle from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, which from the 18th century onward served as a manor chapel; inside it, fragments of 16th-century Renaissance polychromies have survived.
Right next to the vineyard lies the Bolestraszyce Arboretum, founded in 1975 by Dr. Jerzy Piórecki on the grounds of the historic manor and garden complex, about 7 km northeast of Przemyśl. Currently the arboretum covers over 300 ha, including the Cisowa branch, and gathers collections of several thousand plant species, varieties, and forms. The name of Arbor Vineyard is the Latin word "arbor", meaning tree; the name of the neighboring Arboretum is derived from the same word.
About 800 m from Arbor Vineyard stands the Main Armored Fort XIII San-Rideau, an element of the Austro-Hungarian Przemyśl Fortress, built from the mid-19th century until 1914. In 1914, the fortress was one of the largest permanent fortifications in Europe — after Antwerp and Verdun, it ranked third in size. Fort XIII was built between 1892 and 1896 as one of the first armored forts (Panzerwerke) of the fortress. In 1914–1915, the fortress underwent three sieges, and before its capitulation in March 1915 the fortifications were blown up; in the interwar period, demolition was carried out on their site. The fort is associated with a legend about Russian prisoners of war who remained imprisoned in underground chambers for 8 years — this motif became the basis for the film "Fort 13" (1984) directed by Grzegorz Królikiewicz.
