Winnica Świętego Jakuba
The Vineyard of Saint James (Winnica Świętego Jakuba) is located in Sandomierz, near the Dominican monastery at Staromiejska 3. The cultivation area covers 1.04 hectares, hosting grape varieties such as Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnay, Seyval Blanc, Johanniter, Hibernal, Solaris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zweigelt, Cabernet Cortis, Monarch, and Regent. The vineyard offers tours and wine tastings from May to September. Wine sales are conducted exclusively on-site at the Winnica Bistro. The vineyard is part of the Sandomierz Wine Route.
HISTORY OF Winnica Świętego Jakuba
In 1226, Saint Jacek Odrowąż founded the Dominican monastery in Sandomierz. Shortly thereafter, the monks established a vineyard, which became the first in the Sandomierz region and initiated the development of viticulture in the area. In 1238, the vineyard received a princely certificate for the production and sale of wine throughout Europe. Commercial activities continued until the mid-17th century. In 1864, following the dissolution of the Dominican monastery, the vineyard ceased operations. The Dominicans returned to Sandomierz in 2001, and in 2012, they reactivated the Vineyard of Saint James, continuing its centuries-old winemaking tradition.
